The Eye: Summation of Vision, Attention and Destination.
The burden of untreated eye disease is very high among the Rohingya, particularly those in their peak working year who could contribute most to the resiliency at their community. So, in this context Partners in Health and Development (PHD) started a new launch with the Eyecare Department on 3rd October 2022 in the Primary Healthcare Center of FDMN Camp No. 8W. After opening of the eyecare section, a good number of patients with various types of eye problem came to take treatment.
Hashim Ullah, a 59 years old man from Block A -37, Camp 8W, Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar came to hospital with complaints of difficulty to see any near object for last 5 years. He had some comorbidity. His daily activities were deteriorating day by day due to his refractive problem. Specially to read the Quran (Holy book of Muslim), his life was getting miserable day by day with hardship that he can’t read. He came home, each night with sick headache-a headache bred and fed by disappointment, worry, bitterness and rebellion. Thus, he was searching for a resolution. He was informed by a CHW (Community Health Worker) of PHD that at the PHC which is situated in the camp where he is residing has just opened Eyecare Department. PHD’s eye corner has well equipped setup. Next day he paid a visit to the hospital seeking treatment of his eye impairment. Once he entered in the eyecare section, the Optometrist (BSc) examined him very meticulously with cordial behavior. He was so amazed by the surrounding. PHD provides eye medication along with refractive equipment such as spectacles to Hashim Ullah. His refractive error has been corrected by giving him an eyeglass, which was attached with power. He was so delighted and told that he could see every single near object specially during reading a book. He said that now he can read the Holy Quran with pleasure. Also, Hashim Ullah gives blessing to the service providers and PHD.
He said that, “I was very much happy with your service and also will talk about this eye-care service in my community.” After starting of Eyecare Department on 3rd October 2022 in the Primary Healthcare Center, 229 (Male 133, Female 90 and Children 06) patients have been treated with succession. PHD would like to continue this noble initiative to stand beside the distressed community.
